ever compiled.  There are plenty of period-influenced parts which seem to contradict the overriding message at times, but even these provide such an amazing lens into the world and minds of our ancestors that it's hard to to be engrossed when reading it.

I suspect that part of the reason you (and I) prefer the 'to what end' phrase, as opposed to the word 'goal' has to do with our affinity for sequence, like found in chess.  We have a goal of killing the king, but that seems far more nebulous than describing to yourself the reason you make a particular move to begin an attack sequence.
